Are you a Christian? Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour? Are you doing the things that the Lord requires of you? Am I? Christians are given a number of things to do.. ways to live.. instructions to follow, commandments to obey – how to BE.
We are told to abide in Christ, but some choose not to abide in Him. We are called to walk in the light, but some choose to walk in darkness. We are directed to walk in the spirit, but some choose to walk the way of men. We are instructed to walk in truth, but some deny the Lord that bought them. We are commanded to walk in newness of life, but some choose to walk in the old flesh.
What you notice in each of these things is that we are commanded - not forced. We are told to be filled with the Spirit... in fact, it is a continuous day by day action. Be filled, or go on being filled with the Holy Spirit, as we read in Ephesians 5:8. But even this is a choice for the believer. Paul tells the Colossians the great desire of his heart toward all the believers. Paul longs that all believers are filled to overflowing, "be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness. Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light." Colossians 1:9,12
Some believers allow the trials and circumstances of life to shipwreck their faith. They only see the condition of their life instead of accepting their position in Christ. Oh, the trials of life are waxing worse and worse, but faith holds fast to His Word. Some believers consciously, and deliberately, walk away from the spiritual path. They are lured by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Oh, they are saved if they believe in Christ, for God spoke and His word is true, but this grieves the Spirit and quenches the work He desires to do in that life.
Some believers unconsciously and unknowingly do not take the spiritual way. Their dear desire IS to walk in the spirit, in light and truth, and to abide in Christ, but there is a blockage that has barred their way – a resister, blocking their path, and most if not all great men and women of faith have faced this exact difficulty.
Yes, we are commanded to abide in Christ.. walk in the light and in newness of life, and this is not an impossible task set by a cruel overlord. This is the best and most beneficial path that God has laid before all believers. He knows we are but flesh and can never achieve these requirements ourselves. And so He went before and ordered the best and only way to accomplish this path - Abide in Me – and I will work through you. Walk in the spirit – and I will work through you.
It is not a matter of knowing the doctrine. It is not by following a particular set of rules. It is all a matter of the heart. It is just a matter of choice. If your deep desire is to walk in spirit and truth and abide in Christ, He’ll show you how and He will direct your path, but He’ll do it His way. There may be a blockage barring your way that needs removal – He’ll show you. It may be unforgiveness. It may be bitterness. It may be pride. It may be a wrong attitude of heart. It may be a selfish motive, but God knows - but He also waits for this blockage to be removed.
It may be that your perception of God is false and needs changing – He’ll show you. It may be that your feelings towards Him need refining – He’ll show you that too. Sometimes He just wants the man or woman to admit their need and their lack. Sometimes it may even require us to retrace our steps to one point of rebellion. There may be an attitude of heart that needs to be repented of – He’ll show you, but whatever it is, He’s the One that knows the deepest need of the human soul.
God knows the only way to newness of life and this will lead to a life of deliverance, power, and victory in this world – and in the world to come life everlasting, with an inheritance that passes understanding – all because we chose His way. We are to abide in Christ. We are called to walk in truth. We are instructed to walk in the Spirit.
We are commanded to walk in the light, and we are directed to walk in newness of life. So just remember.. if you are prepared to change your mind—God will change your heart.. BUT God will never change your heart – until you change your mind. Trust Him, and ask Him, and He will show you HOW.
