For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, Who is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:11
Jesus Christ has many wonderful names, many beautiful titles, many eternal qualities but perhaps the most excellent and precious of all is that of Saviour – Redeemer. The sin of one man separated the race of humanity from the holiness of God for we are told in the Word of God that sin had separated fallen man from a righteous God, and without a Saviour to save us from our sins – that separation is eternal.
The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. The payment for our sins is eternal separation from God, but He gave His unique Son through Whom comes life. Eternal life is God’s gift – Salvation is God’s gift – Jesus Christ is God’s special gift. The gift of salvation was no afterthought on the part of God. It was God’s purpose to save the race He knew would sin – but it took 4000 years to prepare a lost world.
But finally God’s appointed time arrived and on that special day the angel was finally able to announce, for unto you is born this day in the city of David – a Saviour. A host of angels rejoiced as they raised their voices in a chorus of excited praise singing, glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to men of goodwill.
But holy angels were not in need of a Saviour for they had not sinned, and fallen angels were not the subject of God’s grace, for man alone was made in the image and likeness of God so that God, in the person of Christ could be made in the likeness of human flesh. Christ did not take on the nature of angels nor was He made in their image or likeness. The angel did not announce: unto US is born a Saviour but unto YOU is born this day in the city of David a SAVIOUR, a KINSMAN-REDEEMER, Who is Christ the Lord.
Christ did not come to save the little band of shepherds alone, as they tended their sheep that night – nor was His role of Redeemer limited to the Jewish nation of Israel, through Whom the Seed was born. He was to be Kinsman-Redeemer to all humanity – to Jew and g=Gentile, male and female, young and old, rich and poor – bond and free.
It was to Bethlehem, the city of David to which the Messiah was to be born. But as great David’s greater Son He was not only the offspring of this great king of Israel – but his Lord. He was not only a branch from David’s dynasty – but the root of his line.
The Salvation that is given as a free gift of grace to all Who trust in the name of God’s only begotten Son, is a great Salvation that was given to man by God; announced to the world by angelic beings; confirmed by all Who heard and received the glorious gospel of Christ and recorded for our learning – to guide us into all truth and to give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
Salvation that came through the Man Christ Jesus was not a finite redemption but an eternal salvation. He had been appointed as Saviour from all eternity and His arrival was anticipated from the dawn of time – even from the beginning of the world.
The Salvation Christ gives is not a restricted redemption but embraces every aspect of our lives – body, soul and spirit. He is a complete Saviour, Who is able to save to the uttermost, all who come to God through Him, for He always lives to intercede for us.
Every aspect of the Person of Christ and the work of Christ is unique for He was not only God, but the anointed of God Who was spoken of by the prophets of old and Who Himself became fully man so that He could be our Prophet, Priest and King – bringing God to man and uniting humanity back to the Father. He is not only Creator of all, Lord of heaven and earth and God our righteousness, but He is the Prince of Peace, the Everlasting Father and our Wonderful Councillor. He is not only King of the Jews and King of the Universe but He is King of kings and Lord of lords and of the increase of His government there shall be no end.
He is not only the root and stem of David, but He is the good Shepherd that was born in humble circumstances so that He could save us from our sins and seat us together with Himself in heavenly places for He is our unique Saviour and God’s very Special Gift – so that all Who believe on His name will not perish but have everlasting life.
