But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you.
John 14:26
When writing about the glories we have in the Holy Spirit, Warren Wiersbe wrote: 'People of the world live by sight and depend on the externals, but Christians walk by faith and depend on the eternals'.
There is a lot of truth in this simple statement for the Holy Spirit is our Helper. He is our Help and Helper, our Comfort and Comforter – He is our Advocate. He is also our Teacher and Trainer and His work is to make us more like Christ. When one walks by faith in Christ we have abiding access to the very Spirit of God.
While Jesus lived in the world He was all these things to his little band of followers, But when He ascended on high, He sent the Spirit to replace His physical presence. When the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost, to baptise the Church into Christ and to fill them with His fullness, He took up permanent residence in each believer’s heart – and Jesus promised He is to guide us into truth and train us in all godly living.
Never before had the Holy Spirit permanently in-dwelt the whole body of believers. In the age of Israel, He empowered a few believers for a specific length of time, in a particular way or work and He also came in power upon prophets, priests, and kings, but this was never a permanent indwelling.
Pentecost inaugurated an unparalleled period in the chronicles of the human race. That momentous event in the history of the world began a new and glorious chapter. The ongoing outpouring of the riches of God’s amazing grace from that uniquely special occasion, on all believers, has been through the beautiful ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told His disciples that: the Helper, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you. Sometimes we do not seem to comprehend what the indwelling Holy Spirit means. He is the One that will teach us and enlighten us – and will guide us into all truth. He will teach us about Himself – and without Him, we cannot learn about Christ.
The Holy Spirit, being Deity and a member of the Trinity, knows the things of God. The Holy Spirit is a real Person Who is indwelling us and is close to us at all times. The Holy Spirit – as our Teacher, has perfect understanding and perfect knowledge.
He is the Spirit of truth and of love – He is it Who illuminates the word of God. He is the Spirit of power and peace – He it is Who convicts and converts the soul. He is the Spirit of grace and joy – and He is the Spirit of righteousness and hope.
He has every component of personality including intellect, will, and emotion. He has perfect wisdom; gives perfect counsel and has perfect strength and power. He is the Spirit of God that indwells every believer from the moment they believe.
Let us take time to get to know the Holy Spirit Who lives in each one of us. Let us recognise Him as our Helper and Teacher – our Guard and our Guide. Let us quietly meditate on the following well-loved hymn and the role of the Holy Spirit in our life, as we submit to His leading and guiding willingly and submissively.
Holy Spirit, Truth divine,
Dawn upon this soul of mine;
Word of God and inward light
Wake my spirit, clear my sight.
Holy Spirit, Love divine,
Glow within this heart of mine;
Kindle every high desire;
Perish self in Thy pure fire.
Holy Spirit, Power divine
Fill and nerve this will of mine;
Grant that I may strongly live,
Bravely bear, and nobly strive.
Holy Spirit, Right divine,
King within my conscience reign;
Be my Lord, and I shall be
Firmly bound, forever free.
Holy Spirit, Peace divine,
Still this restless heart of mine;
Speak to calm this tossing sea,
Stayed in Thy tranquillity.
Holy Spirit, Joy divine,
Gladden Thou this heart of mine;
In the desert ways I sing,
“Spring, O Well, forever spring.”
Now incline me to repent,
Let me now my sins lament,
Now my foul revolt deplore,
Weep, believe, and sin no more.
