LET GOD BE TRUE, and every man a liar.
“Goodness” is in the eye of the beholder and it means all things to all men, but the Word of Scripture tells us that there is none good.. not even one – that God alone is good, as Jesus, the God-Man reminded the rich young ruler.
God’s goodness is one of multifaceted faces on the gemstone of His attributes. It is inter-twined and eternally-linked with all of God’s superlative characteristics. His goodness is infinitely perfect. His loving-kindness endures through all generations. Our ‘Good God’ is unfailingly kind, cordial, benevolent, generous and tender-hearted, yet this ‘Good God’ also becomes a blasphemy blare from mankind’s profane choir.
Nevertheless God causes His Son to shine on the evil as well as the good. He sends His rain on the just and the unjust alike for God is very, very good.. and the truth of the goodness of God is disbelieved by saint and sinner alike.. as they, through human reason try to come to terms with this evil-saturated world.
“How can a good God allow this to happen?” argue disbelieving religious skeptics. “How can our Father allow His children to suffer?” is questioned by confused believers. “Why?” is inquiry on the lips of many who doubt His goodness and debate His power.. and barricades of contempt for God are erected by non-believing, foolish cynics – and blocked wall of resigned unbelief are constructed, by disappointed believers.
To Jew and Gentile, sinner and saint alike, every question is answered in Holy Writ, and the words resound as loudly today as they did 2000 years ago:- Had you believed Moses.. you would have believed ME.. Had you believed the prophets through whom God spoke, you would understand. Had you believed Me – O foolish folk and slow of heart to believe all scripture.
If unbelieving saints or disbelieving sinners choose to use their own logic.. they will continue to question the goodness of God in the land of the living- they will continue in their agnosticism and unbelief in the goodness of God.
There are explanations ‘ad multitudum’ in scripture that explains “why” and yet by our own imperfect perceptions and attitudes.. God stands accused. But how we think of God determines our reception and understanding of God.
Most of us have dared, on occasions, to question the goodness of this Good God. Some believers continue to rely on self-logic in their accusations of God’s goodness.. but though every attribute of God appears to conflict with human logic – let God be true, and every man a liar. Rom.3:4, for our good God is very good
