For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
Many hundreds of years before the Son of the Most High was supernaturally begotten in the womb of a young virgin, the prophet Isaiah prophesied that a special child – Who would be Son of the Most High, would be born.. bringing Salvation to all people. The keynote of Isaiah’s forty years ministry was – Salvation is of the Lord, and his message called for Israel to repent of their sins… to return to the Lord and be saved., and this truth is confirmed multiple times in Scripture – that Jesus Christ is God.
The Creator God of Genesis is the Word made flesh, Who came to dwell among man. The Saviour God of Israel is the Man Who was nailed to a cross as God’s gift to man – for there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved – for salvation is found in none other.. and the government of the earth shall be upon His shoulder. The Psalmist sings: The Lord is king forever – while in Revelation we read that, the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ – and He will reign forever and ever.. for He is God of gods, Lord of lords and King of kings.
Every eternal, almighty attribute of the Godhead was glimpsed in the Lord Jesus. No surprise that shortly before His crucifixion His disciples confessed, Now are we are sure that You know all things. Nor is it surprising that as Christ ascended into heaven, He comforted His disciples by saying, Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
No surprise that He could claim, before Abraham was, I Am – and boldly stated – all authority in heaven and earth is given to Me, for He was a Man Who walked in spirit and truth and He was the Son Who did only those things He heard from the Father. The child was to be born of a human mother. The Son was given by God the Father. Angels looked on in amazed wonder as the Word of God; the Wonderful Counsellor; the Mighty God; the Everlasting Father – the Prince of Peace was dressed in mortal flesh.. so He could become the Sacrifice for sin for the whole world.. for you and for me.
Jesus is indeed Wonderful for He is the chief among ten thousand. And He is truly our Councillor for the Spirit of counsel rested upon His whole life.. yet He is also our Wonderful Counsellor, for He understands each one of us personally and sympathises with our weaknesses – yet has been tested in every way as we are, but without sin. He understands all our struggles and cares for us deeply, desiring that we cast all our care on Him, for He cares with the depth of love that emanates from the heart of God. But He also wants a close and personal relationship with each of His own children. We need to open our hearts daily to our Wonderful Councillor. We need to talk to Him and confide in Him. We need to abide in His love and trust His Word – for there’s no heartache that is beyond His almighty power – no anxiety that He cannot calm.
Jesus is indeed the Mighty God for He rescued us from the cesspit of sin – reuniting us with our Creator God, by the shedding of His blood – for we were dead in our trespasses and sins – but Jesus came from heaven to seek and save that which was lost. He knows all about You - even the very hairs of your head are numbered. He scheduled each day of Your life – from before you were even born. He knows the number of our days – for our times are in His hands.. and He knows your every need and has given you access to His throne of grace – and yet before you call He will answer.
Jesus is indeed the Eternal Father, and unlike human parents whose life fades and passes away like the grass of the field – eternal means forever and ever – Amen. He has promised never to leave us or abandon us as orphans. His character does not change and His compassion and mercy lasts from one generation to another for He is the same yesterday, today and forever. We can join with Jeremiah who wrote: because of God’s faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is His faithfulness! The Lord is my portion. I will put my hope in Him. God is good to those who wait for Him, and seek Him with their whole heart – How good it is to trust the Lord the Eternal Father.
Jesus is indeed the Prince of Peace, for by His death He made peace with God on our account and clothed us in His robe of righteousness. By His resurrected life He gives us the peace of God which passes human comprehension and when He went to the Father to prepare a place for us with Him in heaven – He left us His own perfect peace. He said, I’m leaving My peace. I’m giving you My own peace. It’s not the peace the world seeks after but MY peace…. So don’t be troubled in heart – and don’t be afraid.
The keynote of Isaiah’s forty years ministry was – Salvation is of the Lord and so the Son of the Most High was supernaturally begotten in the womb of a virgin – so that He could save His people from their sins and become our Wonderful Counsellor; our Mighty God; our Everlasting Father – our Prince of Peace.
